Caring with Karaoke
16th Annual Caring With Karaoke
September 26, 2024
at The Wonder Bar
We are excited to announce that this year's Caring with Karaoke will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ, and the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (SPTS) has been chosen as this year's Non-Profit Beneficiary Partner!!!
Caring with Karaoke is an annual charity fundraising event hosted by the Young Professionals Group (YPG) of Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce. Each year the YPG selects a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to partner with as its beneficiary of a majority of the net proceeds of the event.
SPTS is dedicated to increasing awareness, saving lives and reducing the stigma of suicide through specialized training programs and mental health resources that empower students, parents, school staff and community members with the skills needed to help youth build a life of resiliency.
The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide was founded in 2005 by two friends who lost teenaged children to suicide. After their losses, the men were shocked to learn that suicide was the third leading cause of death for America’s youth at that time and were determined to do whatever they could to protect other families from the devastation of suicide. Suicide is currently the second leading cause of death for youth age 10 – 24. Several of their close friends and golf buddies including Todd Cohen, Jerry Grasso, Tom Lanning, and Bob Agel helped them form the organization and joined the Board of Directors. They recruited Maureen Underwood, a Clinical Social Worker and nationally recognized expert in youth suicide prevention, and Jeannine Grasso, Principal of Roselle Park Middle School in Roselle Park, New Jersey, to their board. The combination of business savviness and knowledge of evidence-based mental health practices enables SPTS to work quickly, efficiently, and decisively to develop and implement youth suicide prevention programs at both the state and national levels.
After learning there was no requirement for teachers in their home state of New Jersey to receive formal training in suicide prevention, the board made it their mission to have legislation passed in New Jersey requiring all educators to complete at least two hours of instruction in suicide prevention as part of their professional development requirement. The successful passage of this legislation in 2006 made New Jersey the first state in the country to require such training.
In addition to seeing the legislation passed, Maureen helped to develop the actual training program. Making Educators Partners in Youth Suicide Prevention is a user-friendly, free online course that has been approved as best practices by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and has received praise from the nearly 550,000 educators throughout the United States who have completed the course. SPTS has developed and presented in person presentations to over 30,000 additional educators across the country. Annually it is estimated that SPTS serves 375,000 individuals. Assuming that most of these educators has direct contact with at least 25 students, over 14.5 million students may have been impacted by the positive lessons these educators have received about identifying and reaching out to students at potential suicide risk.
The evening will include a karaoke contest with prizes, open karaoke, a gift auction, and more! Don't miss your chance to donate to a great cause and sing the night away!

Our Foundation is for all intents and purposes, still in its infancy. We began by only telling Steph's story and we have grown extremely fast." (SNPF Website)
"Proceeds from the event will be used to expand our current programs and implement new ones. We have so many opportunities to do so much more. For example, Self-defense and CPR public training classes, at no cost to victims or survivors, scholarships for students making a difference in helping the communities. (We currently fund 3 sports scholarships in honor of Stephanie.) We are also working on making changes to current laws and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that affect survivors and victims in NJ."

IS MUSIC TO THE EARS OF CASA FOR CHILDREN OF MONMOUTH COUNTY
Drop the mic! Musical talent and charitable fundraising shared the spotlight at the 13th Annual Caring with Karaoke event recently hosted by the Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce (MRCC) Young Professionals Group. The entertaining event was held at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ, attended by an enthusiastic crowd of contestants, fans, and MRCC members. Participants in the karaoke contest vied for prizes as they showcased their talent for celebrity judges Vito Cardinale, Albie Manzo, and Peter Swain. In addition to the spirited karaoke contest, the evening also included open karaoke, raffle baskets, a light buffet, and drinks.
Each year, the Caring with Karaoke event also lends support to a local charity. This year’s benefit raised funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children of Monmouth County, a network of 951 community-based programs that recruit, train, and support citizen volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in courtrooms and communities. The organization was presented with a donation check in November.
MRCC Young Professionals co-chair Kathrine Dwyer proudly stated, “At our November 5 MRCC networking breakfast meeting, together with my co-chair Jeremy Faberlle, MRCC President Tamer Gouda, and Executive Director Terese Rölke, I had the privilege of presenting CASA of Monmouth County with a donation of $6,500. Proceeds from the event will be used to expand CASA services to train at least 18-28 new volunteers who will serve at least 25-35 never-before-served children. The funds were donated by proceeds collected at our September 30 event at the Stone Pony. Thank you to our generous sponsors for donating, the community for supporting, and our members for attending this fabulous evening! Stay tuned for more events from the Young Professionals of Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce.”
